Esports recognition in the world takes on different folds, and in the case of the German federal government, they have made the move to identify esports as a non-profit. Officials say this move will be beneficial to youth development and gaming clubs across the country. With approval from the cabinet, it now awaits the formal approval of the Bundestag (the national parliament of Germany and the highest legislative body in the Federal Republic of Germany) as it aligns with a commitment outlined in the current coalition agreement.

According to a LinkedIn post by the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space the measure is said to strengthen fair play, support youth protection, and encourage a healthy approach to digital media. If this is passed, esports organizations could gain better recognition and tax advantages similar to traditional sports clubs, bringing opportunities for funding and development.

There was an initial draft that faced a lot of criticisms from esports and gaming organizations highlighting aspects of the draft being overly restrictive. The proposal was revised after a series of discussions. The revised version is viewed by experts as a great step forward for recognition when it gets to the final approval from the Bundestag.

Germany remains Europe’s largest esports market, generating €160 million in revenue as at 2024, with half of the earnings accounted to sponsorships. It still needs inclusivity in the programs as it has only 14.7% of women as participants in the global competitions. This is according to a recent study on the German esports market from esportsradar.gg
