Time With Joshua Nelson

Time With Joshua Nelson

This season on Gamers Change Lives we talk more on incubators and accelerators: programs designed to help startups develop their viable ideas into businesses and marketable products. And the success stories around them.

On today’s episode we covered “Gaming Meets Motorsports: The Battle Racing Entrepreneurial Journey” and our guest was Joshua Nelson, who is the founder of Emotional Ideas, Inc. (USA), which is a patented sports and entertainment technology company.

The work Emotional Ideas does is to use amusement products, attractions, and games and make them relevant to today’s generation. The first thing was to revolutionize go-karting, and led to an opportunity in revolutionizing motorsports. This idea was sparked after Joshua had checked out a local recreational center in his city, Memphis. This had him thinking for a while on combining the gaming technology from Mario Kart into real motor sports as a whole new way to race. And what was seen as a fun idea has now become a blossoming business which is moving into a potential billion dollar venture.

The sport is called battle racing, which is the combination of gaming technology in real motor vehicles. And it is not about the fastest vehicle but rather strategizing with virtual power tools giving the vehicle and driver a temporary advantage in the race. So it is more about combining the virtual into the physical to introduce a whole new way to racing. Hence battle racing, which is inclusive: pro racers, pro gamers, amateur racers or just anyone who wants to have fun on the weekends. So from ages 13 and up, battle racing is for anyone looking to have fun with some amount of competition.  And with prototypes completed in 2023, Joshua and his team at Emotional Ideas look forward to testing their first pilot so people can come and try out Battle Racer after opening up their next round of funding.

So with setting up ventures like this one, it is essential to have a network pool. For Joshua, he looks out for people with certain skill sets, because yes the idea is a viable one and will have almost everyone wanting to be a part of this, but characters that will complement each other to meet goals and be willing to share their wisdom are the aspects one should consider when making these picks for team members. There is also a balance of energy and wisdom you should look out for because innovation for startups at the early stages may come with some challenges especially when it comes to moving into the next stage. Having a youthful force will be able to propel the vision, and push it with the necessary energy and foresight to undertake projects.

With finding a team, the hardest part Joshua highlights is finding people who are motivated beyond getting paid – passionate individuals if you will! Because if money is the reason they are working with you, then that will be their only focus and they may shift their focus into something else if the money stops coming.

The overall goal with battle racing as a genre of professional motorsport racing and in esports is in two folds: provide recreation, which will also come with a competitive side as people can do this with no stress. The other fold is creating a new combat racing league, mimicking the likes of NASCAR and Formula1, with proper advertising and streaming, giving it that look as a new genre of professional racing.
